1 Killed in Placer County Crash on Interstate 80 Near Penryn
PLACER COUNTY, CA (January 27, 2023) – A DUI crash killed one person and injured several others on the Interstate 80 near Penryn Road in Placer County.
According to an article published by the FOX 40 News, the tragic accident took place on Friday afternoon. Officers reported the wreck on January 27 shortly after 4 p.m. near Penryn.
The incident began when a GMC Sierra was traveling at an unsafe speed on the eastbound Interstate 80, east of Penryn Road, in Placer County. The traffic in the area was slowing at the time.
For an unknown reason, the male driver of the GMC truck looked down at his phone. He looked up, failed to see the slowing traffic and then struck the rear of a Toyota Highlander.
Several Injured in Wreck
The impact of the collision pushed the Highlander into the back of a Toyota Sienna. Firefighters along with the paramedics and pronounced the motorist in the Highlander dead at the scene.
The driver of the Sienna and his passengers sustained minor injuries as a result of the wreck. Meanwhile, CHP determined that the motorist in the pickup was under the influence of drugs when he hit the victim.
He survived the incident with possible broken ribs. Medical personnel rushed the suspect to a hospital before officers arrested him for DUI.
CHP forced two eastbound lanes of the Interstate 80 to shut down near Penryn for three hours following the collision. The fatal Placer County crash is still under investigation.
