1 Killed, 2 Seriously Injured in Poway Head-On Crash on State Route 67
POWAY, CA (October 8, 2021) – A head-on crash killed one person and seriously injured two others on State Route 67, south of Poway.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune and FOX 5 News, the tragic accident took place on Friday afternoon. Officers reported the wreck shortly after 1 p.m.
The incident began when a Honda Accord was going north in the left lane of State Route 67, south of Scripps Poway Parkway. At the same time, a Toyota Highlander was traveling south.
The California Highway Patrol said the Honda then tried to pass a Freightliner in the right lane. For an unknown reason, the Accord collided with the big rig near Lazy Acres Drive.
Both vehicles spun out of control in the process. The Honda went into the southbound lane and slammed into the Toyota head-on.
Big Rig and Cars Collide
The semi-truck and the two cars veered off the road and ultimately plunged down a dirt embankment. Firefighters along with the paramedics soon arrived at the scene.
An air ambulance took the 23-year-old Lakeside man driving the Honda to the Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he died.
The driver of the Toyota, a 44-year-old Lakeside woman, sustained major injuries upon impact. Her passenger, a 19-year-old woman, survived with moderate injuries.
Medical personnel rushed both victims to the same hospital for treatment. The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released.
Meanwhile, the 59-year-old Fontana man operating the truck ended up unharmed following the wreck. CHP forced the southbound lanes of State Route 67 to shut down for several hours after the collision.
The cause of the fatal Poway crash is still under investigation.
