Quentin Black, 31, Kills Security Guard in Long Beach Hit-and-Run Crash
LONG BEACH, CA (June 14, 2021) – Authorities detained Quentin Black after a hit-and-run crash that killed security guard in Long Beach.
Police identified the 31-year-old Moreno Valley man as the suspect in the fatal accident which occurred on Saturday afternoon.
The incident began when Quentin Darnell Black was driving a gray 2012 Chevy Tahoe at a high rate of speed on San Gabriel Avenue. The SUV was reportedly stolen.
At the same time, a security guard was at a shack at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in Long Beach. The security station is in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue.
Derrick Smith, 54, Hit by Speeding Car
Police said the speeding vehicle spun out of control and then struck the shack and the guard. The Press Telegram and KTLA News wrote that the collision took place on June 12 shortly before 3:10 p.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and pronounced the security officer dead at the scene. The coroner’s office identified him as 54-year-old Los Angeles resident Derrick Smith.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that the suspect abandoned the Tahoe and fled on foot. They soon located and booked him into the Long Beach Police Department Jail.
Authorities arrested Quentin Black on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury. They set his bail at $100,000.
