GARDENA, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2018) – Rafael Newell, 30, is being sought by police for hitting Joshua Byrd with his vehicle in the 13700 block of Cimarron Avenue on August 27th.
The police are hoping the public can help them locate the suspect who fled after “deliberately running down” the Army veteran who confronted the driver for littering.
Police located the vehicle used in the crime and they have impounded it. The suspect is described as a black made, 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 170 pounds with dark hair and eyes.
The victim reportedly confronted the motorist after seeing him toss trash out of his vehicle. Byrd told NBC4 News he asked the man to pick up the trash. The man did not respond, so a few minutes later Byrd placed the bag of trash on the hood of the suspect’s car. The man drove off and threw bottles of urine at Byrd as he chased after him, but then he turned the vehicle around and ran down the victim.
Prior to the altercation, Byrd stated he saw the man parked on the street with his belongings piled inside the car.
Paramedics took Byrd to a hospital for treatment of a fractured wrist, chipped spine, sprained ankle and
cuts to his face and body, according to NBC4.
The suspect faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run. Witnesses or anyone with information on his whereabouts should call police at (310) 217-9600.
