Fatal Signal Hill Bicycle Accident
LONG BEACH, Calif. (June 26, 2024) — Raider Magallanes, 18, of Long Beach, died last week in a bicycle accident at Cherry Avenue and Skyline Drive in Signal Hill.
The car accident occurred at around 7:35 p.m. on June 18th, according to the Long Beach Post.
The recent Poly High School graduate was riding a bicycle down a steep hill on Skyline Drive towards Cherry Avenue. Upon entering Cherry Avenue, a driver in an SUV collided with the teenager, leaving him with fatal injuries.
The Signal Hill Police Department alleges the boy riding the bike drove through a red traffic light, but victim’s aunt and legal guardian disputes their version of the incident.
Velina Velasquez, the boy’s aunt, believes her nephew had the right-of-way and a green light. He was riding alongside two friends at the time of the crash who witnessed the collision.
Police stated the teenager ran a red light and hit the moving vehicle at the intersection and they have video evidence from nearby Mothers Market. But the boy’s aunt said the video camera does not show what color the light was at the time of the collision.
The driver stopped and cooperated with investigators, police said.
Raider Magallanes was scheduled to join the Marines on Aug. 26. His family has a Gofundme account to raise money for his funeral costs.
