Hit-and-run Driver Crashes into Apartment Complex, Sets off Fire
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (August 6, 2018) — Five people — including three young children — were injured Saturday when a driver fleeing police crashed into the Vintage Fair Apartments on the 11100 block of Hirschfeld Way, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The collision, which took place about 10:20 a.m. on August 4th, set off a blaze that damaged several units at the apartment complex. The children, ages 2, 4 and 7 years old, were inside an apartment where the vehicle crashed. They all suffered minor injuries and were taken to s hospital.
Benjamin Mena, 21, of Roseville, who was driving the vehicle, fled the scene on foot along with his injured passenger. He was later found in the 2100 block of Zinfandel and arrested on suspicion of evading a police officer and possession of methamphetamine. A passenger who had been in his vehicle was taken to a hospital and released. Mena is being held without bail.
Prior to the collision, Mena was stopped at a red traffic light at White Rock Road and Zinfandel Drive. A police officer pulled up behind the vehicle and saw Mena step on the gas and drive through the light. Police lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle, but minutes later they were called to the scene where it crashed.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, it appears that the driver who was arrested is going to be held liable for this crash.
