Raymond Jay Celaya, 62, Kills Child in Fresno Hit-and-Run Crash
FRESNO, CA (June 18, 2021) – Authorities detained Raymond Celaya after a hit-and-run crash that killed a boy in Fresno.
Police identified the 62-year-old man as the suspect in the collision at Friant Road and Fort Washington Road on Thursday night.
The incident began when a 10-year-old boy was crossing Friant Road at the intersection with Fort Washington Road in Fresno. He was walking with his family to buy some water at a store at the time.
At the same time, Raymond Jay Celaya was driving a 2011-14 black four-door Chrysler 300. For an unknown reason, he struck the child in the crosswalk.
Fresno police said Raymond Celaya did not stop to render aid to the child and fled the area. The Fresno Bee and FOX 26 News wrote that the accident occurred on June 17 shortly after 11:30 p.m.
Boy, 10, Hit by Car at Friant and Fort Washington
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and found the young pedestrian left lying on the road. He sustained major injuries as a result of the crash.
Medical personnel soon rushed the victim to the Valley Children’s Hospital. where he died. Family members set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral expenses of the boy.
Meanwhile, police located the Chrysler with front-end damage near West and Emerson avenues. They soon arrested Raymond Celaya on felony hit and run and felony vehicular manslaughter charges.
Authorities booked him into the Fresno County Jail. The fatal Fresno hit-and-run collision near Woodward Park is still under investigation.
