2 Injured in 4-Vehicle Accident on State Route 299
TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2023) — Rebecca A. Helsley of Weaverville, suffered major injuries in a chain-reaction crash Tuesday on Highway 299, just west of Fawn Lodge Road in the Lewiston area of Trinity County.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred around 1 p.m. on Sept. 12th, near the Fawnlodge Forest Fire Station 61, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Rebecca Helsley was driving a Jeep, but was the first of three vehicles rear-ended by a pickup truck after they stopped in a construction zone. Joseph A. Short of Weaverville was driving the 2004 Ford F-350 pickup truck and tried to brake, but his vehicle hit the other motorists.
The Jeep rear-ended a Mitsubishi in front of it before it went off the roadway around 10 feet up an embankment. The Mitsubishi driven by Nancy A. Rich of Cottonwood, struck the Chevrolet in front of it before veering into a ditch roughly 15 feet off the roadway.
Paramedics with the Trinity County Fire Department responded and found Rebecca Helsley with major injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Additionally, Nancy Rich suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to the same hospital.
The drivers of the Ford pickup and the Chevrolet did not report injuries.
Meanwhile, tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Investigators are working on the case to determine fault for the crash on Highway 299 in Lewiston.
