Richard Frost, 74, Killed in Costa Mesa Crash on Newport Boulevard

COSTA MESA, CA (April 13, 2021) – A DUI hit-and-run crash killed Richard Frost along Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa.

Police identified the 74-year-old Newport Beach man as the victim of the fatal wreck which occurred on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened on April 10 when Richard Frost was driving a car on Newport Boulevard, south of 17th Street, in Costa Mesa.

Police said a Chevrolet Malibu involved in a prior Newport Beach hit-and-run then struck him in the process. Richard Frost exited his car in an attempt to stop the other driver involved from leaving.

The Chevrolet ran over the victim and ultimately fled the area. According to the article published by The Orange County Register, officers reported the crash at about 4 p.m.

Drunk Driver Hits Another Car, Flees Scene

Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and found Frost suffering from major injuries as a result of the collision.

Medical personnel rushed him to an area hospital, where he died. Meanwhile, police located the male driver of the Malibu at a Los Alamitos bar.

Authorities determined that he was under the influence of alcohol when he hit Frost. They also found out that he was wanted on warrants related to two other DUI cases in September and October 2019.

The suspect was convicted in May and August of 2016 and in February 2018 in Iowa of DUI. As a result, authorities charged him with single felony counts each of second-degree murder, DUI, and driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or more.

They also arrested him for two misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run with property damage. The tragic Costa Mesa crash is still under investigation.
