Yacht, Fishing Boat Crash 9 Miles Off Shore
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Oct. 29, 2018) — Richard Neff, 66, of San Clemente, died and two others were injured after a 332-foot yacht and a 65-foot fishing boat collided, the Coast Guard reports.
The crash took place on Friday night, roughly nine miles off shore from Imperial Beach near Mexico’s maritime border.
Coast Guard Rescues 17 People; 1 Dead, 2 Hurt
The Coast Guard crews, which reached the two vessels about an hour after it was reported, rescued 17 people after the mega yacht Attessa IV crashed into the Prowler commercial fishing vessel. The crash took place about 8 p.m. on Oct. 26th. There had been 29 aboard the Prowler.
Neff was aboard the Prowler with friends on a commercial fishing trip. During impact, he fell some distance and struck his head.
Rescuers arranged to airlift Neff to UC San Diego Medical Center-Hillcrest, but he later died the next day at the hospital, the Coast Guard said. Two others were injured in the accident for undisclosed injuries.
There were 17 passengers who were on the fishing boat that were transferred back to San Diego. Ten remaining passengers from the Prowler were transferred onto the Attessa IV and brought back to San Diego.
The impact of the crash left the Prowler with extensive damage to the right starboard side.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident.
San Diego Crash Investigation
Police are reviewing the evidence and any witness statements to determine fault. It appears at this time based on the reported facts, that the Attessa may have crashed into the smaller fishing vessel. Once the investigation into liability has been established, the family of the person who died and those who were hurt may file a civil lawsuit to recover their financial losses.
We offer our condolences to the family of Richard Neff and our prayers to the injured.
