Rita Ceja, 36, Injured in Merced Crash at Lake Road and Yosemite Avenue
MERCED, CA (May 24, 2021) – A fatal car crash at Lake Road and Yosemite Avenue injured Rita Ceja outside of Merced.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 36-year-old Merced woman as one of the victims in the wreck on Sunday night.
The incident happened when Rita Ceja was driving a 2014 Honda Accord behind a 2018 Dodge Durango on southbound Lake Road in Merced. She was slowing and preparing to stop at the time.
The motorist in the Dodge, Carl Junction Missouri resident Melanie Graham, stopped at the posted stop sign at the intersection of Yosemite Avenue.
1 Killed, 2 Others Hurt in Multi-Car Collision
For an unknown reason, a 2001 Honda failed to stop and struck the rear of the 2014 Honda. The older vehicle was traveling between 40-50 mph.
CHP said the impact then pushed the rear-ended car into the back of the Durango. Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and extricated the trapped male motorist from the 2001 Honda.
The 40-year-old Ceres man died at the Mercy Medical Center. Rita Ceja and her two passengers, a 40-year-old man, and an 11-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.
Medical personnel soon took them to the same hospital for treatment. The Modesto Bee and Merced GW News wrote that the accident took place on May 23 at about 8:38 p.m.
Meanwhile, the cause of the tragic Merced crash is still under investigation.
