RIVERSIDE, California (March 9, 2015) –-A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a man Friday morning, but later turned himself in a few hours after the pedestrian was hit at University Avenue at Comer Street, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff and Coroner.
The pedestrian identified as Francisco Martinez, 84, of Riverside was struck at 8 a.m. and later died of his injuries at Riverside Community Hospital just before 1 p.m. He was attempting to cross University Avenue when an eastbound driver in a Nissan Frontier hit him, stopped momentarily and then drove away from the scene.
The driver who struck him was identified as Jorge Serrato Cortez, 57. Two hours after the crash at 10:13 a.m. he turned himself in at the Orange Street police station in Riverside.
Police arrested Cortez, 57, on charges of felony hit and run causing serious or permanent injury. He was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
