RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (Jan. 19, 2023) — Robert Gubany, 23, from Fontana, arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence when he allegedly struck and killed two homeless people riding bicycles in Rancho Cucamonga.
The deadly, hit-and-run crash occurred about 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17th at Foothill Boulevard and Etiwanda Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, according to KTLA News.
The motorist was driving in a eastbound on Foothill Boulevard. He reportedly moved to the right into the bicycle lane to pass other vehicles. That’s when his Kia sedan allegedly hit a 41-year-old Upland man and a 42-year-old Upland woman who were heading westbound against traffic at the Rancho Cucamonga intersection, the San Bernardino Sun reports. The woman died at the scene and the man died at a hospital.
Meanwhile, the suspect continued driving and failed to stop as required under California law. He was involved in a second collision later the same night. There were no injuries involved in the second accident.
However, police caught up with the suspect after the second collision and noticed signs of alcohol intoxication.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Robert Gubany on gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol. Bail for Gubany was set at $250,000.
