WILLITS (September 30, 2018) – A truck driver was injured after a traffic collision that killed two people along Highway 101 on Saturday afternoon, according to The Press Democrat.

The wounded victim has been identified as 76-year-old Robert Maffia, of Ukiah.

As per the article, California Highway Patrol said Maffia was operating a 1997 Peterbilt Tractor south on Highway 101 when he collided head-on with a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500.

The 41-year-old woman driving the pickup north on the highway lost control of the car for an unknown reason and crossed into oncoming traffic at about 1:40 p.m. near Reynolds Highway.

Maffia reportedly took evasive actions but the tractor-trailer that was hauling lumber hit the driver’s side of the Dodge. The pickup spun out of the roadway and ultimately became engulfed in flames.

CHP affirmed that Maffia was treated for minor injuries. The woman and her passenger, a 13-year-old girl, both died at the scene.

The names of the deceased have not been yet released but officials described the woman as from Dos Rios, a small community northeast of Laytonville and the juvenile as a Willits resident.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Personal Injury Lawyer

A forensic examination of the Peterbilt Tractor and the Dodge Ram, as well as photos that were taken of the scene, will help investigators determine what exactly caused the tragic crash. Authorities will thoroughly look into the speed of each driver, whether or not alcohol or drugs played a role, whether or not there were any mechanical issues with the trucks, and whether or not one of the drivers involved was distracted or simply did not yield to the right of way motorist. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by the big rig and the pickup, such as point of impact, their final resting positions, skid marks, and gouge marks.

Pending the results and findings of the investigation for this incident, Mr. Robert Maffia may possess the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit seeking a compensation for all the hospital bills, future medical needs, lost income, and pain and suffering.
