Driver Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash at Fresno County Intersection
FIREBAUGH, Fresno County, Calif. (August 23, 2021 ) — Robert Mendoza, 50, of Thermal in Riverside County, died in a two-vehicle collision at North Fairfax and West Nees avenues in Fresno County.
The collision happened about 4:21 p.m. on Friday, August 20th, according to the Fresno County Sheriff Coroner.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the collision just south of Dos Palos and west of Firebaugh, police said.
Robert Mendoza was driving a 1999 Nissan northbound when he drove in front of a 2020 Ford driven by Rene Carrillo, 37, of Lemoore.
The Ford had been westbound on Nees Avenue traveling at about 55 mph.
As Rene Carrillo approached the intersection her vehicle was struck by the Nissan. The front of the Ford collided with the passenger side of the Nissan, police said. Meanwhile, the Nissan went off the roadway and became partially submerged in an irrigation canal.
Bystanders dove into the water in an attempt to save the submerged driver, but sadly Robert Mendoza died on scene.
Investigators with the CHP do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
