Roger Marcus, 74, Seriously Injured in Mendocino County Crash on Highway 101 Near Willits

MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (March 23, 2023) – A fatal crash seriously injured Roger Marcus on Highway 101 near Willits in Mendocino County.

The California Highway Patrol identified the 74-year-old Lafayette man as one of the victims in the wreck which took place on Wednesday.

The incident happened when Roger Marcus was riding as a passenger in a silver 2011 Hyundai going north on Highway 101 near Willits. At the same time, a 2003 Jeep was traveling south.

CHP said due to the rainy conditions, the Jeep swerved out of control and into the northbound lanes. In the process, the car went into the path of the Hyundai.

Woman, 76, Killed in Wreck

The Jeep then slammed into the other vehicle near the Ridgewood scales. The Ukiah Daily Journal and KYMKEMP wrote that the accident occurred on March 22 at around 4:11 p.m. 

The 76-year-old Arcata woman driving the Hyundai died as a result of the collision. Roger Marcus survived the crash with serious injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, a 70-year-old Willits resident Jane Barisione, sustained major injuries. Her passenger, 39-year-old Willits resident James Barber, ended up with minor injuries upon impact.

Paramedics rushed all three patients to the Howard Memorial for treatment. The name of the deceased party has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.

Meanwhile, officers forced the northbound lanes of Highway 101 to shut down near Willits following the wreck. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
