Rollover Crash Highway 395 Near Mammoth Scenic Loop in Mammoth Lakes
MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (July 6, 2026) — A rollover crash involving multiple vehicles temporarily shut down the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 395 near Mammoth Scenic Loop on Monday morning in the Mammoth Lakes area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported on July 6th shortly before 9:45 a.m. on southbound U.S. 395, about a quarter-mile south of Mammoth Scenic Loop.
Initial dispatch reports indicated one vehicle overturned in the crash. Witnesses also reported that a bystander’s vehicle was struck during the incident.
In a separate and unusual development, dispatch logs indicate one person involved in the collision attempted to cross the highway and was struck by an unidentified vehicle that left the scene. The individual was reportedly walking around after the incident, though authorities have not released information on the extent of any injuries or whether the hit-and-run driver has been located.
Later updates from the scene suggested a Chrysler had been traveling at a high rate of speed before colliding with a truck, although investigators have not confirmed the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The collision prompted the closure of all southbound lanes while emergency crews responded and worked to clear the wreckage. By approximately 10:15 a.m., one southbound lane had reopened, while the second lane remained closed between mile markers 30.5 and 31.1 as cleanup operations continued.
CHP requested two tow trucks, including a flatbed, to remove the damaged vehicles from the highway.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved or confirmed whether any injuries were sustained.
Motorists traveling through the area experienced delays while emergency personnel investigated the crash and reopened the roadway.
