APPLE VALLEY, California (January 20, 2015) – Ronald Stanley Olson, 76, of Apple Valley was killed Friday when he was struck by a suspected DUI driver as he was gathering his mail in front of his home on Joshua Road, near Standing Rock Avenue, according to a press release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner.
The traffic accident was reported to CHP officers about 1:20 p.m. A 26-year-old Apple Valley woman was driving a gold 2002 GMC pickup truck when she crashed into a chain-link fence and a block wall prior to hitting Mr. Olson who was standing at his mailbox in the 14800 block of Joshua Road, according to the Victor Valley Daily Press.
Apple Valley Fire paramedics responded to the crash and quickly transported him by ambulance to St. Joseph Health, St. Mary, but he later died of his injuries.
The driver of the car who hit Mr. Olson was injured in the crash and had to be cut from her mangled vehicle by firefighters at the scene. She was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with a severely broken leg and hip injuries, news reports said. The report stated that she was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
CHP officers are heading up an investigation into the circumstances
“My condolences go out to the family of Mr. Olson as they cope with his sudden loss,” said Attorney James Johnson. “There is no excuse for drunken driving these days.”
