LOCATION: Kelseyville, Lake County
DATE OF ACCIDENT: Thursday, May 10th
May 11, 2018– According to the Press Democrat, Rosa Covarrubias, 59, has been identified as the woman fatally injured following a freak accident Thursday morning on Highway 29.
The accident which involved a single vehicle occurred at roughly 5:25 a.m.
The driver of a Honda Civic, Margarita Garnica-Sanchez, 40, had been driving northbound on the highway. In an attempt to avoid a dead animal that laid in the middle of the road, Garnica-Sanchez jerked her steering wheel causing the vehicle to enter southbound lanes. She was unable to regain control as the vehicle ultimately ended up rolling over veering off the road and down an embankment.
Per the article, Garnica-Sanchez’s passenger, Covarrubias, sadly did not survive the collision and was pronounced at the scene.
The 40-year-old Garnica-Sanchez sustained major injuries for which she was flown to a hospital. She remains in serious condition.
Police officials believe that weather may have played a role as heavy fog rolled through creating potential visibility issues for drivers.
California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the collision.
