2 Killed in Head-on Crash on Highway 89
TRUCKEE, Calif. (May 28, 2021) — Ross Schultz, 20, and Dixie Lewis, 19, both of Berkeley, died in a Truckee crash on Highway 89 Tuesday afternoon near Cabin Creek Road.
The college students were riding in a car that collided with a big rig truck about 3:25 p.m. on May 25th in Placer County, according to East Bay Times and Berkeleyside.
The California Highway Patrol reports the pair occupied a black 2014 Ford Fusion sedan collided head-on with a 2015 Freightliner truck.
Police believe the Ford crossed over the median and into opposing southbound traffic on Highway 89.
The young man driving the car and his teenage passenger both died at the scene of the Truckee crash. Meanwhile, the 45-year-old Fernley, Nev. man driving the truck suffered minor injuries.
Berkeley High School Graduates
Both people who died were recent Berkeley High School graduates. In fact, Dixie Lewis graduated from Berkeley High in 2020 and recently finished her freshman year at Pomona College. She was on the softball team at college and planned to major in neuroscience. Also, her father, Michael Lewis, is a well-known Berkeley author and financial journalist who authored “Moneyball.” Her mother is Tabitha Soren, a photographer and former MTV reporter.
Ross Schultz had just completed his second year at Cal Poly Pomona. The young man was studying kinesiology. Also, he was a member of the his high school’s two-time NCS Championship soccer team. A Caring Bridge site offers support to his grieving family.
