3-Vehicle Crash on Highway 180 in Fresno County
FRESNO COUNTY, California (March 27, 2023) — Ruben Rodriguez, 47, of Antioch, died in a 3-vehicle crash on State Route Highway 180 near Sonoma Avenue in Fresno County.
The 47-year-old Antioch man was driving a Chevrolet Malibu westbound on SR-180 approaching two eastbound vehicles, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department. Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man was driving a Ford Mustang “directly in front of a 44-year-old female who was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on State Route 180,” police said.
The man driving the Chevrolet reportedly crossed over into the eastbound lane where he sideswiped the Ford before colliding head on with the Toyota, police said.
Both the drivers of the Ford and the Toyota suffered major injuries in the collision. Paramedics responded and rushed them to Community Regional Medical Center.
Furthermore, the driver of the Chevrolet was thrown out of his vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was airlifted the the same hospital, but later died of his injuries just after midnight.
Authorities are conducting an investigation into the crash to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor.
Finally, police believe that the drivers of the Chevrolet and Toyota were not wearing seatbelts. This most-likely contributed to their injuries, police said.
