Caltrans Worker Ryan Smith, 42, Injured in Fresno Crash on Highway 99

FRESNO, CA (August 15, 2021) – Caltrans worker Ryan Smith was hospitalized after a fatal crash on Highway 99 in Fresno.

The California Highway Patrol identified the 42-year-old Fresno man as the victim of the wreck which occurred on Saturday morning.

The incident began when Ryan Smith was with a Caltrans crew sweeping the center median of southbound Highway 99 in Fresno.

For an unknown reason, a Honda Civic traveling in the fast lane hit the back of the attenuator. Its driver, 31-year-old Clovis resident Felipe Garay, then swerved into a 2019 Freightliner big rig.

The impact pushed the semi-truck into a 2014 Thomas school bus with no children onboard. The Fresno Bee and Your Central Valley wrote that the collision took place on August 14 at around 8:20 a.m.

Caltrans employee Ryan Smith sustained minor injuries as a result of the Fresno crash. Paramedics took him to the Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Medical personnel rushed Felipe Garay to a hospital where he died. The drivers of the big rig and the bus ended up unharmed following the wreck.

Meanwhile, CHP forced the southbound Highway 99 to shut down from Ashlan to Herndon avenues for several hours after the collision. The cause of the Fresno crash is still under investigation.
