Sammie Franks, 55, Seriously Injured in Crash at Highway 12 and Burson Road
CALAVERAS COUNTY, CA (April 16, 2021) – A tow truck crash seriously injured Sammie Franks at Burson Road and Highway 12.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 55-year-old Angels Camp man as the victim of the DUI collision on Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened when Sammie Franks was operating a tow truck east on Highway 12 in Burson. At the same time, a Nissan Murano was going south on Burson Road approaching a stop sign at the intersection.
CHP said the man driving the Nissan violated the right of way. He drove into the path of the tow truck, which did not have a stop sign.
In the process, the front of the truck collided with the right side of the Murano. The tow truck spun out of control and struck the support structure of the overhang in the front of the Burson Market.

The Modesto Bee and My Mother Lode wrote that the support then collapsed. The truck hit a Chevrolet pickup parked under the overhang and a Toyota pickup parked east of the market.
The Nissan continued, left the roadway and slammed into a barbed wire fence before coming to a rest in a field. Officers reported the accident on April 15 at about 5:20 p.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and found Sammie Franks suffering from major injuries as a result of the crash.
An air ambulance took him to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. The motorist in the Murano sustained moderate injuries and was also airlifted for further aid.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that the driver of the Nissan was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck took place. Authorities soon arrested him on suspicion of DUI causing injury.
