Samuel Tovaz and Sergey Khripunov Injured in Merced Crash on Highway 99
MERCED (August 8, 2019) – Two drivers were injured after an alleged DUI hit-and-run crash along Highway 99 Wednesday night.
The victims have been identified as 20-year-old Los Gatos resident Samuel Jessie Tovaz and 45-year-old Sergey Khripunov, of Conroe, Texas.
According to an article written by Merced Sun-Star, California Highway Patrol said the incident began as the northbound traffic slowed for a construction zone.
Tovaz was driving a 2014 Ford Focus when he was rear-ended by a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 on Highway 99. The Focus then collided with a 2016 Toyota 4Runner driven by Khripunov.

Paramedics responded to the scene and attended to both Tovaz and Khripunov who were hurt as a result of the collision. The accident occurred at about 8:15 p.m., just south of R Street.
Tovaz was rushed to Memorial Medical Center for complaint of pain and lacerations. Khripunov also complained of pain, but declined medical assistance.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that the driver of the Chevrolet pickup did not stop to render aid and took off. The suspect and his car were later located near T and 2nd streets.
The motorist was ultimately arrested and was being held at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI and felony hit-and run resulting in injury.
