SAN BERNARDINO, California (April 7, 2014) – A woman thought to be in her 30s was killed early Sunday morning when she was struck by a driver in the 1300 block of Baseline Avenue, according to a press release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner.
About 12:47 a.m., CHP officers responded to a 911 called about a pedestrian who was critically injured after being struck by a car on Baseline Avenue. Paramedics also responded and transported the woman who was suffering from head and upper body injuries to Loma Linda Medical Center. She later died of her injuries about 1:23 a.m., the report said.
The woman’s name has not been identified at this time.
CHP officers are investigating the fatal San Bernardino pedestrian accident to determine liability. They will interview involved parties and witnesses, as well as collect evidence at the scene, in an effort to piece together exactly what happened. A report will be issued with their findings.
“My prayers go out to the family of this woman as they cope with her sudden loss and try to piece together what happened on Baseline Avenue this past weekend,” said James Johnson, a personal injury attorney who services clients in San Bernardino County.
San Bernardino Wrongful Death Claims
One of the reasons people file a wrongful death claim against a driver in a pedestrian accident is because the family of the victim wants justice for their loved one’s death. However, there are also practical reasons for filing a claim such as obtaining support for dependents, compensation for medical costs stemming from the crash as well as funeral costs.
Under California law, there are specific rules about who can file such a claim and there are statutes of limitations that regulate how long a family has to file one of these claims. It’s important that evidence is preserved soon after an accident and witnesses and involved parties are interviewed for the best result.
“Sadly, some people wait too long to file these types of claims and miss their opportunity,” Johnson explains. “It’s heartbreaking to have to tell a potential client that they missed a deadline or that critical evidence has been lost.”
