2 Killed, 1 Critical After Crash into Big Rig Truck on Sanyo Avenue
OTAY MESA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2019) — A driver and a passenger are dead and another passenger injured Tuesday night when a vehicle fleeing Border Patrol agents crashed into a semi-tractor trailer truck and went down an embankment.
The collision took place about 6:20 p.m. on Feb. 19th. near Otay Mesa Road and Sanyo Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Related: It was the second collision on the same night that involved suspected Mexican migrants and Border Patrol agents.
The Otay Mesa chase began when Border Patrol agents observed a driver in a white sedan picking up a man and women suspected to be migrants. They attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused and sped off. The driver ran through a red traffic light and reached speeds of 100 mph before eventually it turned south onto Sanyo Avenue and crashed into a semi tractor trailer truck.
Two male occupants in the sedan died upon impact and a woman was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation by the San Diego Police Department with full cooperation by the Border Patrol.
