Two Fatal Crashes on State Route 54 in Paradise Hills Area
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 15, 2020) — Two people died in two separate collisions on Tuesday night that took place on state Route 54 (Highway 54) in the Paradise Hills area.
UPDATE: Edward Tofiga Lesa, 30, of National City, was ID”d as the pickup truck driver who died. Raymond Ferreyra, 35, of San Diego, was ID’d as the passenger who died in the Honda CRV crash. Both were identified by the San Diego Medical Examiner.
The initial crash was reported at 9:30 p.m. to the California Highway Patrol. Edward Lesa was driving a pickup truck with three female passengers lost control of the vehicle and it overturned on westbound State Route 54 near Reo Drive, the CHP said. All four occupants of the pickup truck were ejected from the vehicle, but the driver was run over by a passing motorist. The man suffered major injuries and died at the scene at 10:56 p.m. Meanwhile, the three women who were passengers in the pickup were transported to the hospital undisclosed injuries.
Roughly one hour after the rollover crash, a driver in a Honda CRV crashed into the back of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that had stopped in traffic that was backed up on the westbound SR-54 due to the earlier fatal rollover crash.
A passenger, identified as Raymond Ferreyra, who was in the CRV suffered fatal injuries and died at 10:56 p.m. The driver of the Honda fled the scene and Ferreyra to die alone at the scene. Meanwhile, the woman driving the Silverado pickup truck was transported to the hospital with major injuries.
The CHP is heading up the investigation into both of these collisions. At this time, alcohol and or drugs are suspected factors in the second collision.
