Pickup Truck Hits Bicyclist at Fairmount and Montezuma
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 10, 2025) — A 51-year-old man riding a bicycle suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon in a car accident on Fairmount Avenue in the Talmadge neighborhood of San Diego.
The traffic accident occurred at around 5:31 p.m. in the 5100 block of Fairmount Avenue, according to a report by the San Diego Police Department.
Police officers responded to the scene and located the injured man down in the roadway with multiple injuries.
Investigators determined the cyclist was riding his bicycle northbound in the bike lane before the collision.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man driving a white 2022 Ford F-250 was heading northbound on Montezuma Road and exited on the transition ramp onto Fairmount Avenue.
Bike Lane Transition Dangerous for Cyclists
The bicyclist was in the bicycle lane and reached the transition ramp at Montezuma Road. The bike lane does not have a safe transition for cyclists so the rider had to cross into the path of the pickup truck to continue in the bicycle lane. The oncoming truck did not yield the right-of-way to the cyclist and rear-ended the bicycle. There is no signage warning vehicles that bicyclists may cross here and to yield the right-of-way.
“This is a dangerous transition for cyclists and the city should fix this immediately,” said Attorney James Johnson, a San Diego bike accident attorney.
Paramedics responded and rushed the injured bicyclist to a hospital. The rider is being treated for several injuries including fractured ribs, a clavicle fracture, a spine fracture, a fibula fracture, and multiple abrasions.
Authorities do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the collision.
The SDPD’s Traffic Division is heading up the investigation. Witnesses are asked to call 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
