Man Seriously Injured in San Diego Head-On Crash on 5 Freeway
SAN DIEGO (January 13, 2019) – A motorist was seriously injured after a crash on the 5 Freeway that killed a wrong-way driver Sunday afternoon, according to San Diego Union-Tribune and 10 ABC News.
The accident involving two vehicles occurred shortly after 4 p.m., just before Highway 163.
As per the reports, California Highway Patrol said a black colored sedan was allegedly driving north in the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway when it collided head-on with a white Volkswagen minivan.
Wrong-Way Driver Dead in 5 Freeway Car Accident
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials responded to the site and pronounced the wrong-way driver dead at the scene. The fatally injured individual had Arizona license plates and a suitcase in the trunk.
The male motorist in the minivan was reportedly rescued after being trapped inside the wreckage. He was immediately taken to UCSD Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition.
The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released. Meanwhile, CBS 8 wrote that three lanes of the 5 Freeway were forced to shut down following the wreck.
The lanes were re-opened just after 6:30 p.m. The incident remains under investigation.
