SAN DIEGO, California (February 23, 2017) – A fatal traffic collision took place on eastbound Highway 52 Thursday afternoon, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch team.
The accident occurred at about 5:09 p.m.
In an article by FOX 5 San Diego, CHP said the driver of RoadOne San Diego tow-truck was was hooking a disabled trash truck up to his vehicle when he was struck by a Ford Explorer.
The victim, identified by his family and friends as 55-year-old Fred Griffith, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ford, driven by 48-year-old Michael Gilbert Gray, was headed east near Mission Trails Regional Park when he swerved off the freeway and hit Griffith. He allegedly fled the scene.
CHP affirmed that Gray was later arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of drunken driving causing injury or death, fleeing the scene of a crash causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated
