San Diego Man Dies Weeks After Chula Vista Two-Vehicle Crash

Michael Lewis Schaffer, 59, Dies After Crash at Bonita Road, Glen Abbey Blvd.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (July 14, 2026) — A San Diego man who was critically injured in a two-vehicle collision in Chula Vista in late May has died from his injuries, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The victim was identified as Michael Lewis Schaffer, 59, of San Diego.

The crash occurred at approximately 12:04 p.m. on May 27 at the intersection of Bonita Road and Glen Abbey Boulevard. According to the Medical Examiner, Schaffer was driving one of the two vehicles involved in the collision when emergency personnel responded to the scene.

Schaffer was transported to Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center, where he remained under medical care for several weeks. He died at 9:25 p.m. on July 9.

The Medical Examiner determined Schaffer died from complications of blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. His death was ruled an accident, and no contributing medical conditions were identified.

The California Highway Patrol’s San Diego Area office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Authorities have not released additional information about the second vehicle involved or what may have led to the crash. Schaffer’s next of kin has been notified.
