Woman Hospitalized After Pedestrian Accident at Mira Mesa and Black Mountain
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2019) – A 79-year-old woman is fighting for her life early Tuesday morning after being hit by a vehicle at Mira Mesa Boulevard and Black Mountain Road.
The collision was reported just after 5:30 a.m. at this busy Mira Mesa intersection, according to San Diego police.
The woman was reportedly in the crosswalk walking against a red traffic light when a driver in a red sedan struck her. The red four-door Acura was allegedly traveling between 50-60 mph when it struck the victim. Police say the posted speed limit is just 40 mph.
Police found the unconscious woman in the roadway and upon the arrival of paramedics she was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a broken pelvis, compound fracture to her shinbone and head trauma.
The driver of the red sedan stopped and cooperated with the investigation into the collision.
San Diego Accident Investigation
Once all evidence is collected and all parties involved have been questioned, police will determine liability for this collision.
At this time, it appears that the driver may have been speeding at the time of the collision and the pedestrian was crossing against the traffic light. In cases such as this, one or both of the people involved could be held liable. It all depends on the facts. Were there witnesses to the collision? Video surveillance or drive cam footage? Did the traffic light turn red before the pedestrian had time to reach the other side? There are many unanswered questions including whether or not this was a dangerous intersection.
