3 Killed, 2 Seriously Injured in Crash on Interstate 5 Near Walnut Grove Road
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA (March 23, 2021) – A crash killed several people and seriously injured others along the Interstate 5 near Walnut Grove Road.
The incident happened when two California Highway Patrol officers were assisting a disabled tractor trailer on the southbound Interstate 5. They were inside their patrol unit at the time.
Car Hits CHP Vehicle, Catches Fire
For an unknown reason, a 2021 Subaru SUV drifted off the road and slammed into the rear of the CHP vehicle. The impact then pushed the cruiser into a dirt embankment near Walnut Grove Road.
The Subaru ultimately struck a tree and ended up fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and pronounced the three occupants in the SUV dead at the scene.
Medical personnel also rushed the two CHP officers to a nearby hospital for treatment of major injuries. The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released.
Meanwhile, authorities soon forced the southbound side of the Interstate 5 to close for a time following the crash. The cause of the fatal collision is still under investigation.
