CAYUCOS, San Luis Obispo County (December 3, 2016) – A deadly traffic collision was reported in the area of Old Creek and Montecito roads on Saturday afternoon, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch team.
The accident took place shortly before 1 p.m., east of Highway 1 near Whale Rock Reservoir.
In an article by The Tribune, CHP said 59-year-old Mark Hedges was drivinga 1995 Toyota Tacoma east past Montecito Road when he crossed double-yellow lines to pass another vehicle in front.
Hedges, of Templeton, continued into the westbound lane to pass. However, he reportedly did not notice see 47-year-old Jose Martel riding a bicycle toward him.
The two collided head-on. Martel, of San Luis Obispo, was thrown from his bike died at the scene.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Hedges pulled to the shoulder and stopped. The incident remains under investigation.
