Major Injury Crash on I-5 Freeway in San Diego County
SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (Sept. 27, 2021) – A San Ysidro wrong-way crash resulted in injuries Saturday on the Interstate 5 Freeway.
The five-vehicle crash happened about 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25th due to the actions of a wrong-way driver , the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash took place in the Otay Mesa West area. The vehicles collided in the southbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway near state Route 905, according to a CHP incident log.
The initial crash involved a faded red Honda Civic was traveling north on the southbound side of the freeway. The car crashed into an oncoming Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. The collision set off a crash with three other vehicles, the CHP said.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department units responded to rescue one person who was trapped in a vehicle.
At least three people suffered injuries including a passenger in one of the vehicles who suffered a broken leg. Paramedics treated at least two other people for unknown injuries.
Meanwhile, debris from the collision was scattered across all freeway lanes, police said.
Investigators seek to determine what led up to the San Ysidro wrong-way crash.
