1 Dead, 2 Injured in Crash at Chestnut Avenue and Lyon Street
SANTA ANA, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2018) – Three burglary suspects fleeing police officers were involved in a collision that killed one and critically injured the other two.
The suspects fled a traffic stop in Tustin and then crashed their vehicle just a short distance away in Santa Ana, police said.
The traffic stop was made about 11 p.m. on Tuesday night in the 600 block of Main Street in Tustin.
A police officer saw the three people running from a business called the Red Poppy Boutiqu . They got into a blacked-out SUV and then drove off without stopping.
The police officer pursued the vehicle and tried to pull it over, but it sped off at more than 100 mph. The officer stopped the pursuit, but the suspects kept driving and eventually crashed after hitting a dip in the roadway at Chestnut Avenue and Lyon Street. The driver lost control of the SUV and it crashed sideways into a tree on the front passenger side where it killed the occupant seated there.
Paramedics responded and found the driver and a second passenger in the vehicle also badly injured. They were transported to a hospital in critical condition, police said. All of the people involved were from Los Angeles.
Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered luxury handbags and other goods inside the SUV that were allegedly taken from a business in the 600 block of Main Street in Tustin. It turned out that the business had been burglarized.
