The crash took place about 10:30 p.m. last night, just north of 17th Street.
Police stated that the man was traveling northbound on the 55 Freeway in his 2015 Ford Mustang when he allegedly made an unsafe lane change, crashed into a 2016 Honda Pilot and both vehicles ended up on the right shoulder. The vehicles also crashed into a metal guardrail.
The man suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to Orange County Global Medical Center, but he later died of his injuries.
The 55-year-old Yorba Linda woman driving the Honda was not injured in the crash, the report said.
Police believe that speed may have been a factor and there could have been a speed contest involved in the crash, but the investigation into liability is ongoing.
Witnesses or anyone with information about this fatal crash, may contact the California Highway Patrol Santa Ana office at 714-567-6000.
