2 Killed, 7 Injured in Highway 101 Crash Near El Capitan State Beach
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (July 15, 2021) – A crash killed two people and injured several others on Highway 101 near El Capitan State Beach.
The Santa Maria Times and Noozhawk wrote that the tragic accident occurred on Thursday morning. Officers reported the wreck at about 7:55 a.m.
The incident happened when a Ford Expedition was traveling about 70 mph north on Highway 101 near the El Capitan State Beach.
For an unknown reason, the Ford SUV spun out of control. It drove across the lanes and the unpaved median, and into southbound traffic lanes.
The Expedition crossed from the right-hand lane into the left-hand lane of northbound Highway 101 and struck a Ford F-450. The SUV ended up propelled into the air as it entered the southbound lanes.
Multiple Vehicles Collide
In the process, the Expedition slammed into a Dodge Grand Caravan and a Honda Accord driving in the left-hand southbound lane. The SUV rolled onto its right side and continued across the lanes.
A Chevy Bolt and a Toyota Tundra veered to the right to avoid the collision. The California Highway Patrol said the Chevy collided with the Expedition while debris hit the Toyota.
Two passengers in the Ford SUV died at the scene. Paramedics soon took the driver and two other occupants to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.
One of them sustained major injuries while the other two suffered moderate injuries. Medical personnel also rushed the operator of the Dodge for treatment of major injuries.
Firefighters treated the three people riding the Honda at the site for minor injuries they sustained in the wreck. The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released.
Meanwhile, CHP forced the southbound lanes of Highway 101 near El Capitan to shut down for multiple hours following the crash. The fatal collision is still under investigation.
