SANTA BARBARA, California (March 3, 2017) — A 39-year-old Santa Barbara man died in a collision late Thursday night on the southbound US 101 Freeway, just north of the Carrillo exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place about 11:53 p.m. after the driver of a big rig identified as Jerry Johnson, 71, of Paso Robles, suddenly experienced a blowout in his rear tire. Johnson began to pull over to the right-hand shoulder before a Toyota Prius struck the back of the big rig.
The 39-year-old man and sole occupant inside the Prius sadly died of his injuries.
The crash resulted in several southbound freeway lanes being closed off for approximately 90 minutes while the wreckage was cleared as California Highway Patrol officials investigated.
Circumstances including liability and whether or not alcohol was involved remain to be known at this time.
