SANTA MONICA, California (February 6, 2017) –A CHP officer allegedly shot and killed a man armed with a knife early Monday morning in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The suspect was later identified as Gerardo Vasquez, 52, a man who was wanted by police for attempted murder for stabbing his roommate on Friday.
The fatal shooting took place about 12:20 a.m. this morning near a 10 Freeway overpass. The CHP were notified that a man was running on the freeway so they attempted to find him and followed him onto Pico Boulevard. A foot pursuit ensued as the man ran through several businesses and streets before he went back to the freeway. The suspect was eventually cornered between two buildings on Pico Boulevard. It’s unclear why police shot the man, but he was allegedly wielding a knife and possibly threatened officers. After the initial shooting, Vasquez reportedly shouted at officers and threw the knife at them before being shot a second time by a second officer. One of the shootings involved using bean bags in an effort to subdue the suspect, but the final shots involved bullets.
The victim’s identity was not released pending notification of his family.
