Scuba Diver Dies After San Pedro Rescue in Waters Near Gaffey Street

scuba diver rescueDiver Taken to Hyperbaric Chamber on Catalina Island

SAN PEDRO, California (July 15, 2017) — A female scuba diver died Saturday about two hours after she was pulled from the Pacific Ocean by another diver. The incident took place about 6.5 miles south of the Angels Gate Cultural Center at 3601 S. Gaffey Street in San Pedro, according to the US Coast Guard.

The ocean rescue took place about 10:22 a.m. this morning when the diver was taken out of the water unresponsive and taken by boat to a hyperbaric chamber on the Isthmus of Santa Catalina Island.

The rescuers included the Los Angeles Fire Department’s land and sea response team, Los Angeles County Lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The diver’s condition worsened and she succumbed to her injuries on Catalina Island. The report does not indicate whether the woman was an experienced or novice diver, nor whether they were out on a trip by themselves or with a group of divers.

The incident is under investigation to determine liability.

Scuba divers are often at risk of injury or death for many reasons, but inexperience, mechanical problems, water conditions or human errors are the most common. There may also be liability on the part of a dive boat operator under some circumstances.
