Security Guard Derrick Smith, 54, Killed in Long Beach Hit-and-Run Crash
LONG BEACH, CA (June 13, 2021) – A hit-and-run crash killed security guard Derrick Smith on San Gabriel Avenue in Long Beach.
The county coroner’s office identified the 54-year-old Los Angeles man as the victim of the fatal collision on Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened when Derrick Smith was at a security guard shack at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in Long Beach. It is located in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue.
Security Officer Hit by Speeding Driver
At the same time, a gray 2012 Chevy Tahoe was traveling at a high rate of speed on San Gabriel. Police said the car then struck the guard station and the security officer.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced Derrick Smith dead at the scene. The Press Telegram and KTLA News wrote that the accident occurred on June 12 shortly before 3:10 p.m.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that the driver of the Chevy exited the car and fled on foot. Authorities are still searching for the motorist.
The security guard shack ended up destroyed following the Long Beach hit-and-run crash. Anyone with information can call the police at 562-570-7355.
