SANTA ANA, California (July 10, 2017) – High school basketball coach Tracey Stephan Fulford, 52, of Santa Ana has been arrested after it was discovered he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student-athlete at Segerstrom High School.
Fulford, who has also worked as a track and field coach during his 37-year tenure at the Santa Ana Unified School District, was arrested on Sunday. Police say a 19-year-old female student and her parents came to the Santa Ana Police Department Saturday night to report that he had allegedly engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with the teenager from the time she was 16 until 18 years old. The teenager also alerted the school coaching staff about what happened on Friday, July 7, but when the staff allegedly discouraged her from speaking out about the alleged crime she went to police.
The girl told police that she and Fulford began to engage in inappropriate sexual acts during private basketball lessons and that she willingly went into a storage room at the school and other locations in the gymnasium to engage in sexual acts. Later, after she turned 18, the coach and teenager met off campus to engage in consensual sex.
The high school basketball coach was taken to the Santa Ana Jail where he was charged with PC 288/ 647.6 Child Molest, PC 314 Lewd Conduct and PC 313 Distributing Harmful Matter to a Child and taken into custody where he is being held on $100,000 bail.
Police went to Fulford’s place of employment in Irvine where they arrested him the following day.
Police detectives are also going to investigate the allegations that staff at the school failed to complete mandated reporting of the crime to police to school administrators.
The police detectives are also looking into whether there have been other victims due to his long tenure at the school district and the fact that he has provided students with private lessons.
