Off-Duty Police Sergeant Killed in Motorcycle Crash
NUEVO, Calif. (Aug. 2, 2022) — Riverside Police Sgt. Matthew Lewis died Monday night in a motorcycle crash on Pico Avenue at Santa Rosa Road in Nuevo.
The deadly, two-vehicle crash occurred about 7:15 p.m. on August 1st at the Nuevo intersection, according to the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner.
The off-duty Riverside police sergeant was riding his motorcycle northbound on Pico Avenue approaching Santa Rosa Road, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Meanwhile, a driver in a red GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling southbound on Pico Avenue, hauling a trailer. Authorities told the LA Times that the pickup truck’s driver made a left-hand turn in front of the oncoming motorcyclist. The motorcycle crashed into the side of the pickup.
Paramedics responded, but despite efforts to save his life, Sgt. Matt Lewis died at the scene.
The Riverside Police Department stated that the police sergeant had worked there for 25 years and is survived by his four children and one grandchild.
