Shawn Powers, 38, Seriously Injured in Calaveras County Crash on Highway 12
CALAVERAS COUNTY, CA (April 24, 2023) – A fatal crash seriously injured Shawn Powers on Highway 12 near Wallace in Calaveras County.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 38-year-old Valley Springs man as the victim in the wreck which took place on Saturday.
The incident happened when Shawn Powers was driving a 1995 Land Rover SUV west on Highway 12 near Wallace in Calaveras County. He then slowed to make the left turn onto Southworth Road.
At the same time, Douglas Smith Jr was riding a 2021 Harley-Davidson behind the Land Rover. CHP said he was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Motorcyclist Killed in Wreck
The 50-year-old rider then drove into the eastbound lane in an attempt to pass the car. In the process, the motorcyclist collided with the left side of the SUV.
The Union Democrat and My Mother Lode wrote that the accident occurred on April 22 shortly before 11:30 a.m. Shawn Powers sustained major injuries as a result of the crash.
Paramedics rushed the driver to the San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp for treatment. CHP said Douglas Smith Jr died following the accident.
Meanwhile, officers forced a stretch of Highway 12 to shut down for a time after the wreck. The cause of the Calavera County crash is still under investigation.
