Fatal Pedestrian Accident Highway 54 in National City
NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (Dec. 3, 2018) — Shawn Gilbert Priddy, 51, of San Diego, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash on state Route 54 Sunday night about 10:20 p.m., authorities said.
Police say a 32-year-old man driving a borrowed Ford Explorer fled the scene after hitting the victim. He returned the vehicle to its owner on D Street near Third Avenue, police said. The suspect’s relative later called 911 to report what happened.
Police were able to locate the 51-year-old pedestrian at 11:40 p.m. in the gore point of westbound South Bay Freeway at the southbound Interstate 805 Freeway. The suspect was arrested and faces felony hit-and-run charges.
The CHP closed down a portion of the roadway about 11:45 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unknown why the man was on or near the freeway, but there is a nearby homeless camp at this location.
Police are heading up an investigation into the cause of this crash and assign liability. At this time, the suspect has been arrested and will face felony hit-and-run charges for the death of the pedestrian. I’ts unknown whether or not the victim’s family will pursue a wrongful death case against the driver as well.
