Passenger, Child Hospitalized After Car Accident at Pearl and South Coast Highway Sunday
Laguna Beach, CA (August 24, 2020) – Three people, including a child, suffered injuries following a traffic collision in the area of Pearl Street and South Coast Highway Sunday afternoon.
According to the Daily Pilot News, 28-year-old Stephanie Berkell Montoya was at the wheel of a vehicle traveling southbound on Pearl Street. When Montoya approached the South Coast Highway junction, she allowed the vehicle to veer off the roadway and hit two parked vehicles on the west side of the road.
The crash took place a short time before 5 p.m.
Our sources indicated the force from the impact caused the vehicle of Montoya to flip over onto its roof. First responders found the car at rest in the middle of two southbound lanes.
Authorities affirmed the two passengers of Montoya–an adult female, and a child, both suffered injuries as a result of the wreck. Paramedics rushed the patients to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo for treatment of unknown extent of trauma.

Meanwhile, officials said Montoya fled the scene on foot and was later found near Ruby Street and South Coast Highway. The suspect also received treatment for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash. After being medically cleared, police arrested Montoya on suspicion of a felony DUI causing injury, child endangerment, a felony hit and run, driving with a suspended license and DUI while on probation for a DUI.
Further investigation on the case is ongoing.
