For an unknown reason, the Chevrolet drifted to the north dirt shoulder, and its operator then over-corrected back onto the road. The Trailblazer ultimately drove into the path of the Toyota, causing the two cars to collide head-on.
Covarrubias and Vargas were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant in the Chevrolet, 24-year-old Atwater resident Jesus Vargas, was rushed to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto and was listed in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the two occupants of the Corolla were also hospitalized with major injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
