Redding Man Killed in DUI Crash; Driver Arrested
REDDING, Calif. (June 19, 2020) –Steward Helmer, 63, of Anderson, was arrested on DUI and manslaughter charges after he struck a man on Highway 273 near Breslauer Way in a fatal collision.
The victim was identified as Murray Ronald Roseberry, 61, of Redding. He was identified by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
Helmer was reportedly driving an SUV and hauling a boat trailer when he allegedly struck the victim about 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver stopped after the collision and called 911 to report the crash, however, upon their arrival police noticed the driver showed signs of intoxication. It was determined that he was under the influence of alcohol and or drugs and he was booked into Shasta County Jail.
Roseberry suffered major injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center where he later died.
The crash remains under investigation by police.
