2 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision Near Mathilda Avenue
Sunnyvale, CA (July 16, 2022) – Two people died following a traffic accident that occurred on Highway 101 early Saturday morning.
The NBC and East Bay Times News reported three vehicles collided on the freeway near Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale. According to the article published online, the wreck involved a Toyota Prius, a Jeep Wrangler, and a Chevrolet Camaro.
Preliminary investigation revealed the Prius, and Wrangler were both heading south on SR-101. Due to alleged drunk driving, the two cars ended up crashing into each other. The force from the impact caused the Wrangler to overturn and land in the middle of the road. Per local news source, the Camaro traveling in the same direction was unable to stop and struck the wreckage. Officials said the Camaro slammed into the mangled Prius occupied by two female passengers.
Shortly after 2:45 a.m., rescue teams arrived at the location. First responders found at least one woman ejected onto the northbound lanes. Both female passengers in the Prius suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. Authorities only identified the deceased as a 22-year-old, and a 40-year-old.
Medical personnel later mentioned they transported the driver of the Camaro to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
2 Arrested in Sunnyvale Deadly Car Accident on Highway 101
During the investigation process, officers determined the drivers of the Prius, and Wrangler were both intoxicated at the time of the violent crash. Police arrested the two suspects on suspicion of DUI.
Further investigation is ongoing on the deadly accident that happened on Highway 101 in Sunnyvale.
